The Benefits of Music Workshops for Schoolchildren

Music has a unique way of bringing people together. It encourages creativity, builds confidence and gives children the opportunity to express themselves in a fun and supportive environment. At Bodhrán Buzz, our school workshops combine these benefits with the energy, rhythm and rich cultural heritage of the Irish bodhrán.

Raise School Spirit – and the Roof – with Bodhrán Workshops!

Bodhran Buzz School Workshop

Children naturally love making music, and there is something particularly exciting about picking up a drum and creating a rhythm together. But a bodhrán workshop is about much more than making noise!

A Bodhrán Buzz workshop can help children develop listening skills, co-operation, coordination, concentration and confidence, while encouraging qualities such as perseverance, self-discipline and mental agility.

Our workshops give children a refreshing break from their usual schoolwork while providing a positive and empowering learning environment. They get to try something completely different, work together and discover that learning can be creative, energetic and, most importantly, fun.

We offer workshops for children of all ages, from primary school right through to Senior Cycle and Transition Year.

Big Buzzers – Secondary Schools & TY

Studetns enjoying a bodhran buzz workshop

Our Big Buzzers workshops are designed for secondary school students and Transition Year groups, combining music, culture, creativity and plenty of hands-on participation.

Students can learn about the history and development of the bodhrán, explore Irish traditional music and discover how rhythms come together to create a group performance.

We aim to bring culture, music and fun to secondary schools across Ireland, creating an experience students will remember long after the workshop ends.

Little Buzzers – Primary Schools

Primary School Workshops

Our Little Buzzers workshops introduce younger children to the bodhrán through games, rhythms, performance and storytelling.

Generally, our school workshops are suitable for children from 1st Class upwards, although we're happy to chat about workshops for younger children to see what might work best.

The sessions are designed to be accessible and engaging, even for children who have never picked up a bodhrán before.

Learning Through Music

Our Little Buzzer workshops incorporate the three main strands of the music curriculum: Listening & Responding, Performing and Composing.

Listening & Responding

School workshop

Music is all about listening, and our workshops show children just how important it is to listen to the people around them.

Through fun and interactive games, children learn to listen to each other, respond at the right time and become aware of the sounds and rhythms around them.

These activities can help develop concentration, teamwork and communication skills while showing children how their individual contribution fits into a larger group.

Performing

Students performing together

Performing together can be a fantastic confidence boost for children.

Students have the opportunity to experience group performance and, where they are comfortable doing so, occasional solo performance. No child is ever pressured to perform alone – the focus is on encouragement, inspiration and having fun.

Learning that persistence and practice can lead to success can give children a real sense of achievement and help build confidence that extends beyond the classroom.

Composing

Who says children can't be composers?

During our workshops, children have the opportunity to create their own rhythms. These rhythms are developed in small sections before being brought together to create a unique group groove.

It's a brilliant way to demonstrate creativity, teamwork and the idea that everyone's contribution can play an important role in creating something bigger.

What Happens During a Bodhrán Workshop?

Bodhran Buzz School Workshop

Our one-day school workshops are packed with music, culture, history and hands-on activities.

Children can learn:

  • The history of the bodhrán and its place in Irish culture.

  • How the bodhrán was traditionally made and how modern drum-making methods have developed.

  • How to hold the bodhrán and the stick correctly.

  • The basics of producing their first beats.

  • Different types of tunes found within Irish traditional music.

  • Basic rhythms for some of the most common traditional tunes.

  • How professional bodhrán players use different techniques and sounds.

  • How rhythms can work together as part of an ensemble.

  • Through fun, interactive musical games.

There are also demonstrations showing how tunes sound at full speed and the incredible range of sounds that can be produced from the bodhrán.

One-off workshops typically last between 60 and 80 minutes, making them an ideal addition to a school activity day, music programme, cultural event or special school occasion.

Every Child Gets a Bodhrán

One of the best things about a Bodhrán Buzz workshop? You don't need to provide the instruments!

Bodhrán Buzz has 150 bodhráns available for students to use, as well as top-quality professional bodhráns for participants to try during the workshop.

This means children can get hands-on from the very beginning, rather than having to watch someone else demonstrate.

For schools looking for a more in-depth learning experience, we recommend approximately 15–20 participants. If the aim is to have lots of fun with a larger group during a one-day workshop, 30–60 participants is a great number.

Larger groups can also enjoy the atmosphere, with students from other classes welcome to watch and see what's happening, with some assistance from additional teachers where required.

More Than Just a Music Workshop

Students in a bodhran circle

The beauty of a Bodhrán Buzz workshop is that children don't simply learn about an instrument – they become part of the music.

Working together in a bodhrán circle encourages children to listen to one another, keep time and contribute to a shared performance. They learn that everyone's rhythm matters and that working together can create something they couldn't achieve individually.

By the end of a workshop, children can have a real sense of achievement, success and connection, all while discovering more about Irish music and culture.
